Cable introduces MMS & GPRS services

Following the successful upgrade to its new, state-of-the-art Nokia GSM/GPRS (2.5G) mobile network, Cable & Wireless played host to two highly impressive and well-received events to officially launch its new MMS & GPRS services - the first telecom operator in Seychelles to introduce such advanced GSM services!

The first event, held at the Plantation Club on Friday the 9th of June, took the form of a corporate cocktail where a number of C&W's business customers were given the opportunity to experience the wonders of MMS and GPRS services first-hand. Using mobile phones equipped with cameras, photos of the guests were taken and immediately sent to a website using MMS and then projected onto a large screen. This provided a unique and intelligent way of demonstrating the benefits of MMS in a live environment, to the delight of all invited guests!

Representing Nokia (C&W's GSM partner) at the event, Mr. Petteri Paasila said: "We are very happy and proud to be chosen as a trusted partner for Cable and Wireless. With the latest Nokia Networks technology Cable and Wireless' customers will be able to enjoy not only state-of-the-art network quality but also advanced mobile services such as MMS and Web browsing for the first time in the Seychelles."

To round off a hugely successful evening, over 100 invitees walked away with a brand new Nokia 6101 mobile phone and a souvenir pin badge that contained a photo of themselves taken at the event from a camera phone!

On Saturday the 10th of June, C&W took MMS to the SMB Hall at Roche Caiman where a musical show was held for the youth. Popular artists including Dezil, Jahna, Leo and more were on hand to enhance the party atmosphere. The 300 plus invitees were not only treated to the entertainment and live MMS demo, but also walked away with pin badges as souvenirs of the fun drenched evening. Some twenty-five really lucky youngsters each received a free mobile phone whilst other winners took home free Cable Prepaid Starter Packs, caps & t-shirts. The big winner of the night, however, was Cable MMS with scores of youth wanting more of the fun service!

Cable MMS & GPRS services are currently available to all C&W mobile customers free of charge for a trial period that ends on the 10th of July 2006. Customers need to set up their phone for these services, either by logging onto http://cwsc.wdsglobal.com/seychelles/phonefirst, a site specifically created for this purpose, or by visiting any C&W Customer Services Centre.

Currently, customers who have set up their phones can send MMS messages to an e-mail address and to any local C&W prepaid or post-paid mobile phone that has also been set up for MMS. C&W intends to introduce international MMS plus more GSM value added services in the near future with the aim to further delight its mobile customers.

What is MMS & GPRS?
MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service, a technology that allows you to create, send, and receive text messages that also include an image, audio, and/or video clip. MMS messages can be sent from one mobile phone to another or to an e-mail address.

GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service and is a technology that allows your phone to transfer data at moderate speeds over the GSM network. A useful benefit of GPRS technology is WAP, short for Wireless Application Protocol, which gives you the ability to browse the Internet from your mobile phone or PDA whilst on the move. Using GPRS you can also use your phone as a modem to connect your laptop/PC to the Internet.
